Lewis drops re-election bid

FRANKFORT, Ky. The final minutes before today's election filing deadline brought the surprise end to one political career and the possible resurgence of another.

As attention focused on Louisville businessman Bruce Lunsfords filing to unseat U.S. Sen. Mitch McConnell, a representative for U.S. Rep. Ron Lewis, R-2nd District, slipped into the Kentucky Secretary of States office and pulled Lewis name from the ballot.

At about the same time, Lewis chief of staff, Daniel London, filed for the seat.

The move caught some Republicans off-guard and angered others but not state Sen. Brett Guthrie, R-Bowling Green, who caught wind of Lewis pending retirement and was there to file for the office as well.

Lewis said in an interview this evening that he was homesick and that serving in Washington wasnt as fun since the Democrats took control of Congress following the 2006 election.

BigChampagne is Watching You

Joe Fleischer twists restlessly in his Aeron chair and nods at the voice on the other end of the telephone. Tapping his fingers on his computer's mouse, he stares out the window of his Beverly Hills office at the new BMWs and battered Celicas inching down Wilshire Boulevard. "Uh-huh, uh-huh," he says. "Got it." Fleischer is talking to a client, an executive at one of the major labels who's working a band he's sure could go platinum, if only radio would give the group a chance. The band's first two albums earned it a fervent fan base, but to get bigger, its new single needs airplay, the all-important spark of sales. "Give me a story I can take to radio," the executive on the other end of the line tells him.

Fleischer hangs up, turns to his computer, and clicks through an online database.

Analysis: Romney, McCain Turn Up Rancor

Not to be outdone, McCain's team unveiled their own video of Romney's face superimposed on the windsurfing body of 2004 Democratic presidential nominee John Kerry. "Mitt Romney seems to change positions like the wind," the video says.

The sparring spilled over Friday.

McCain went on the offensive, saying: "I've been a leader. Americans want leaders. They don't want managers."

Romney returned fire, arguing that voters aren't "looking for a talker or a committeeman or someone who loves to get together and debate."

By Saturday, the debate spiraled even further downward.

McCain said of Romney and Iraq: "Now, one of my opponents wanted to set a date for withdrawal that would have meant disaster." Then he added: "If we surrender and wave a white flag, like Senator Clinton wants to do, and withdraw, as Governor Romney wanted to do, then there will be chaos, genocide, and the cost of American blood and treasure would be dramatically higher."

But Romney never supported the public date for withdrawal or a specific date for U.S.

Lindsay Lohan off the wagon

Lindsay Lohan has fallen off the wagon yet again, it has been claimed.

The 'Mean Girls' star - who spent two months in rehab last year for alcohol addiction - was seen drinking vodka at New York hotspot The Box on Friday night (25.01.08) as she partied with shipping heir Stavros Niarchos, DJ Samantha Ronson and 'The Hills' star Brody Jenner.

A fellow clubber told the New York Post newspaper: "Lindsay took a swig of vodka from a bottle of Grey Goose. She was trying to keep a low profile and covering her face."

The 21-year-old actress was said to be all over 24-year-old reality TV star Brody at the club, but then moved on to the 1 Oak club with Paris Hilton's ex Stavros.

A witness there said: "Lindsay wasn't drinking."

Lindsay's representative refused to comment.
