2008 Nightlife Awards
White returns to the Oak Room for a three-week stand beginning Feb.12. Allan Harris took the jazz vocalist trophy and justified the honor with "L-O-V-E," bolstered by pianist and music director Tedd Firth, who plays with vigorous chops and then some. The femme nod went to vet jazz thrush Carol Sloane, who offered some beautifully subtle Ellingtonia with a gently bounced "Just a Sittin' and a Rockin'" and a reverently phrased "All Too Soon." Hilary Kole remembered Oscar Peterson with "Bewitched, Bothered and Bewildered," on which she pairs with the late pianist on a yet-to-be-released CD. Kole studiously revealed the passionate subtext of the Rodgers and Hart classic, leaving the listener with the glow of the long-simmering embers of a classic torch song. Cabaret comedy honors went to Christine Pedi, who justified the nod with hilarious takes on Liza Minnelli, Ethel Merman and Carol Channing.
Editorial: Lawmakers must stop developers''SLAPP' suits
As acronyms go, "SLAPP" suit is perfect. It stands for "strategic lawsuits against public participation," but slap -- as in a backhander across the chops -- is the operative term. That's slap as in abuse, bully and intimidate. It's legal extortion and it's got to stop. In development circles, SLAPP suits -- such as ones filed by Meijer, Inc. and the Village at Grand Traverse LLC against Acme Township officials -- are nearly perfect weapons. They are filed against planning commission members or township trustees as individuals, not in their official capacity, which means the people being sued can't depend on the township's insurance policy to defend them. Private citizens who get too mouthy are often targeted, too. If the person being sued needs a lawyer, he pays the fees.

'Mormon' term often misused
It seems like just when the mainstream LDS Church gets some accurate media attention, another "Mormon" story blasts onto the scene, spawning a flurry of sound bites that often confuse those who live outside Utah. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints for years has waged a vigorous public relations battle to gets its message across with award-winning TV commercials and well-received interviews of President Gordon B. Hinckley by such television personalities as Mike Wallace, Tom Brokaw and Larry King. Then comes something like this week's arrest of Warren Jeffs, the leader of a secretive polygamist sect that in no way is connected to the LDS Church but considers itself the true standard bearer for the beliefs set forth by LDS Church founder Joseph Smith. Jeffs, who has been on the FBI's Ten Most Wanted list, faces criminal charges in Utah and Arizona that center largely around his alleged insistence on presiding over "marriages" between underage girls and older men who practice polygamy.
Fike H.S. Coach Facing Sex Offense Charge
Wilson — A former Fike High School physical education teacher and wrestling coach faces a felony charge of sexual offense and a charge of contributing to the delinquency of a minor, the Wilson County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday. David Brandon Earp, 33, of Sims, was charged Friday, authorities said. He resigned from the Wilson County Schools on Saturday, the school system said. The system had hired Earp in August, according to Robert Kendall, the system's public relations director. The case began after a parent told Fike Principal Steve Ellis of a text message found on a student's cell phone that suggested inappropriate behavior, officials said. Ellis contacted schools Superintendent Larry E. Price. Price contacted the sheriff's office, but deputies reported Jan.
