Guardsmen on smuggling charges
Sounds like the start of a stand up comedy routine. But it's no joke. Because this is our country we're talking about; and the three front runners for the Democratic party nomination really are an African American, a woman and a white "son of the south."As a black woman, I find it quite amazing that, in a year when many thought the big news would be Hillary's very real chance to become the first female president, Barack has entered the scene to give her a run for her money and for a place in history.Of course, both candidates do not want you to vote on the basis of race or gender. But there's that third fella -- the one who stands to benefit from all the recent bickering between the front runners: John Edwards. While the other two square off over "fairy tales" and the relative legacies of Dr.
Israel News Agency: Keep Olmert, Fire Peretz
Jerusalem ----May 2...... A few have described the present political environment in Israel as one which has been swept up by a tsunami. Politicians, defense personnel, journalists, foreign diplomats, business people and a vast majority of the general public in Israel have been burning the midnight oil trying to keep up with the rapid political developments since the Winograd Report of the Second Lebanon war was released in Jerusalem. A massive natural knee-jerk reaction to have Olmert resign has been egged on by opposition members of Prime Minister Ehud Olmert. It's the same primal behavior mimicked by lynch mobs - let's find someone to destroy for all of our problems. Student groups from across Israel joined residents of the western Negev town of Sderot and army reservists for a protest march yesterday, calling on Israel Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and Defense Minister Amir Peretz to resign.
Workers Struggles: Asia, Australia and the Pacific
Tamil Nadu Co-operative Milk Producers Federation workers demonstrated at Sathuvachari in Vellore on January 21 for a 14-point charter of demands. Their demands included the immediate implementation of an order issued by the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam state government in 1998 giving permanency to 100 casual workers and for promotions on a seniority basis to employees with more than 20 years service. The workers are members of the All Trade Unions Federation of the Vellore and Tiruvannamalai Districts Cooperative Milk Producers Union. Indian communication workers protest privatisation plans Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited (BSNL) employees demonstrated outside company offices in Tirunelveli and Tuticorin in the state of Tamil Nadu on January 21.
Hillary Clinton, Mitt Romney win Nevada caucuses
Ron Paul in a close race for a distant second place. Thompson, the former Law & Order TV actor, and Huckabee trailed. Romney said Republicans had cast their votes for change _ and that he was the man to provide it. “People are very concerned about what's happening globally but they're also concerned about what's happening here at home," he said after arriving in Florida, site of a Jan. 29 primary. The former millionaire businessman sketched the outlines of a $233 billion (euro158.78 billion) economic stimulus package far larger than anything President George W. Bush or congressional leaders are discussing, including tax cuts for individuals and businesses. Obama had pinned his Nevada hopes on an outpouring of support from the Culinary Workers Union, which endorsed him last week.
US film studios and television networks announce layoffs and cutbacks
In response to the film and television writers strike, now in its twelfth week, Warner Bros. and ABC Studios are carrying out or preparing significant cutbacks. Warner Bros., a unit of giant Time Warner, sent notices last week to approximately 1,000 television and film production workers warning that an unspecified number of layoffs would soon be announced. ABC Studios has cancelled nearly two dozen production contracts, claiming force majeure (a clause in contracts covering events or circumstances beyond the control of one or both of the parties). According to the Hollywood newspaper Variety, this signifies a 25 percent reduction in ABCs roster. All the major studios had previously suspended such production deals, but ABC (owned by Disney) was the first to take the drastic step of ending them.
Effects of lax lending standards settling in
There are increasing signs that the subprime home mortgage pain is spreading to other forms of consumer credit, economic observers say. On Thursday, the American Bankers Association released data showing that for many types of consumer loans, delinquency has reached the highest rate since mid-2001, when the nation was in the embrace of recession. Delinquency is defined as payments that are 30 days or more overdue. "There has been an increase in certain categories of delinquencies," said Carol Kaplan, senior manager of public relations for the American Bankers Association. "We are seeing stress in housing-related loans and we anticipate that trend continuing." .
