Old Media Continues to Hide Major Reason for Ford's Free-Fall

Ford Motor Co., in the midst of a restructuring, fell to No. 3 in U.S. auto sales last year, as Toyota Motor Corp. posted its 12th straight year of record U.S. sales and moved up to second place behind General Motors Corp.

Even though Ford held on to pickup leadership with its F-Series -- the nation's best-selling vehicle nameplate for 26 years and the best-selling truck for 31 years -- the company's Ford brand is no longer the nation's best-selling make (Note: Chevrolet now is -- Ed.).

Political background to the CPE protests

We are reposting the following series of articles on the revolt of the French working class in November-December 1995 in the hope that it will help to clarify the political background to the present upheaval in that country. The ongoing revolt by millions of youth and workers is a further response to the effort by the French ruling class to slash or eliminate entirely the social gains made in decades of struggle.

In November-December 1995, the working class revolted against efforts by the right-wing regime of Prime Minister Alain Juppé to “reform” the social security system, just as today the government of Dominique de Villepin is “reforming” France’s labor laws. In 1995 millions of workers, led by the transport workers in particular, rejected the claims made by the government and the media and recognized the maneuver for what it was—an attempt to shift the burden of the social costs on to the back of the working population.

Mike Luckovich

I am absolutely astonished that Senator Klinton, a leading candidate on the Democrat side, says she wants to surrender in Iraq, she wants to wave the white flag. After all the sacrifice we've made in this surge, which everybody knows is succeeding, she wants to surrender and bring the troops home, and set a date for withdrawal," McCain said. "I have never, never in American history heard of a leading candidate for president of the United States that wants to surrender to the enemy."$$$$

I got to give the guy credit, that was right up her fat as-s.

$$$$When the discussion finally turned to the subject of Iraq, both Romney and Giuliani went out of the way to take shots at Hillary Clinton. Romney said it was "audacious and arrogant" for Klinton to have asserted earlier in the week that progress in Iraq is due, at least in part, to the Democrats pressing to get US forces out as quickly as possible.

Coming Soon: SR to Release E-mail Exchanges ... (Not so fast...)

Update: After reviewing the messages and our options (none good), we've decided not to post the messages. Here's the situation:

Of the 50 messages, a few have explicit photos embedded in the message. We can't publish those photos (one shows a toddler's penis). We also have a strong ethical policy against blurring or otherwise manipulating photos.

Some of the messages are completely innocuous. The rest of the messages only refer to attachments. Those attachments are explicit, so we can't publish them.

We've also gone through each message to blur e-mail addresses for privacy reasons.

So, if we don't publish any of the explicit images, and we refuse to blur, crop or otherwise alter them, all we're left with is a bunch of forwarded messages that say things like "take a look at this!"

We decided that did not advance the story in any significant way.

Scots do not want to end the Union, merely modify it

IT'S time. Time for a change. Time to move on. This is the last column from this writer which will appear in this position in this paper. A new and extremely challenging role on the business desk awaits.Sadly, it means no time for the glorious self-indulgence of expressing a weekly opinion on the affairs of the nation. The world of politics is a continuously fascinating one. There is always something new. Political parties take power and always, in the end, lose it. Politicians' fortunes ebb and flow. Plots and conspiracies abound. Policies evolve and change.Over time, the decisions made by our elected representatives really do "make a difference", a phrase politicians use frequently, to the lives of the poor, long-suffering voters whose interests they are supposed to represent. Politics matters. And having spent many years at both Westminster and Holyrood as a reporter – and worked, albeit for only a year, on the "dark side" as a special adviser to former First Minister Henry McLeish – politics had become like a drug.

Today's European Trading Scandal Highlights Need for Crisis Planning ...

BRYN MAWR, Pa., Jan. 24 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today's announcement by European investment banker Societe Generale that a single employee allegedly committed a $7 billion case of trading fraud points to the need for employers to heighten safeguards against internal and external threats, according to a recently released book by the President of The American College.

"Stock option backdating, subprime losses and credit card theft represent market exposures that raise questions about Board governance and internal controls," notes Laurence Barton, Ph.D. "Where were the auditors? Who has accountability and where is the outcry," he notes.

Barton, a widely quoted analyst and professor at The College who is the former vice president of crisis management for Motorola worldwide noted: "Crisis management is more than safety awareness - what can companies do to prevent all kinds of threats, from workplace violence to structural failures and product recalls? We are witnessing a profound lack of quality assuredness in management oversight that extends across industries."

His new book, Crisis Leadership Now, was released by McGraw-Hill.
