U.S. News: 2004's Swift Boat Vets One of ‘Dirtiest Campaigns Ever’

In the age of the 24-hour cable news cycle, "things got viral very quickly," says Allan Lichtman, a political history professor at American University.

Fact check. Within weeks, news organizations, including the New York Times, said that the group's claims about Kerry's medals had little or no merit (his opposition to the war proved more problematic). "The allegations were bogus, but that didn't matter," says Lichtman. "The public isn't out there fact-checking."

Here's what Knight does not explain. Professor Lichtman is not some nonpartisan professor. He ran as a Democrat for U.S. Senate in 2006. Knight is correct that the New York Times reported in its news pages that the charges against Kerry's combat stories were "unsubstantiated." (Clay Waters did extensive work on that at TimesWatch.) But is the New York Times any less partisan than the Senate candidate from Maryland? The first Times story was more focused on probing the connections between the anti-Kerry vets and the Republican establishment than it was on the veracity of Kerry's combat tales.

Fred's Failure

THE IMMIGRATION ISSUE HAS FLIPPED in President Bush's favor. The public now firmly supports toughened border enforcement plus--and this is a big plus for the president--a system for letting illegal immigrants already in America earn citizenship. ... [snip] ... The ones with the politically untenable position are Democrats who want an immigration issue (but not actual legislation) to use against Republicans in November, and Republicans who want merely to increase border security.

The upshot is that an immigration bill appears likely (but not certain) to pass when Congress returns from its Easter recess on April 24--and probably in a "comprehensive" form congenial to Bush and Republican congressional leaders. Senate Majority Leader Bill Frist and House Speaker Dennis Hastert have indicated they back this approach, not a bill simply calling for stronger border security.

Ottawa Senators say they'll fine Emery for latest transgression

The Ottawa Senators have decided to fine Ray Emery for his latest transgression in a season that has included no shortage of negative headlines for the goaltender.

Emery showed up late for Ottawa's practice in Long Island on Monday. It was the second time this season he has been late for a skate. "We're going to fine him," Sens GM Bryan Murray told The Canadian Press on Tuesday.

Murray declined to comment on how much he would fine Emery.

The collective bargaining agreement has two possible areas the Senators could look at:

-Page 245 of the CBA states, regarding "rules governing the conduct and conditioning of a player," that "the club may impose a reasonable fine upon the player and deduct the amount thereof from any money due..."

-Page 280 of the CBA states, "any player who misses a scheduled practice without a valid and pre-approved permission will be fined" 1/187 (187 regular-season days) of his NHL salary.
