US/Indo Nuclear Agreement: Derailing a Deal

Now France, Russia and Australia have moved to pursue nuclear deals with India, as China has with Pakistan - hardly a surprise, once the global superpower has opened the door.

The Indo-US deal mixes military and commercial motives. Nuclear weapons specialist Gary Milhollin noted Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice's testimony to Congress that the agreement was "crafted with the private sector firmly in mind," particularly aircraft and reactors and, Milhollin stresses, military aircraft. By undermining the barriers against nuclear war, he adds, the agreement not only increases regional tensions but also "may hasten the day when a nuclear explosion destroys an American city." Washington's message is that "export controls are less important to the United States than money" - that is, profits for US corporations - whatever the potential threat.

Sound and fury, signifying nothing

I'm sure the totalitarians are trembling in fear. Some comments: – A statement from the U.N. Security Council may be meaningful, but what effect will it have? Will deploring "the use of violence," however "strongly," stop Burma's brutal military junta from using violence, strongly? Will it persuade the junta to negotiate, to compromise, to engage in "genuine dialogue," to seek peace? Of course not. It should go without saying that diplomacy is a necessary and effective tool with respect to international affairs, but it often requires teeth to be effective in any real and substantive way. This is a statement without teeth.

– Has China really shifted position, that is, taken a new and tougher line on Burma? Is it now on the side of the U.S., the U.K., France, and other western democracies? Of course not.

Canada's Aid Seeded China Dam

The Canadian government's little-examined role in the building of China's Three Gorges Dam sheds light on how foreign governments and companies helped China move forward with one of the most controversial engineering projects in history.

Many Western governments, including the U.S., initially refused to support China's plan to build the world's largest hydroelectric dam. Canada was the first Western country to break ranks and back the massive project. That opened the door for Western companies to sell lucrative high-technology equipment to China, while certain governments pledged taxpayer dollars in export credits.
