| VA Probes Doctor's Role in Patient Deaths
In July 2006, Veizaga-Mendez voluntarily surrendered his medical license in Massachusetts before it could be revoked, essentially ending disciplinary proceedings there. Durbin says the VA was informed of that action and asked the doctor about it, but was satisfied when Veizaga-Mendez said he just didn't want to pay dues in a state where he no longer practiced. Illinois' department of professional regulations says Veizaga-Mendez's decision to relinquish his Massachusetts license triggered an investigation into his credentials in June 2007, which culminated with regulators indefinitely suspending the doctor's license last month. But that came too late for Bob Shank, and possibly other patients. Now, Durbin says his office is hearing from whistle-blowers from within the Marion VA hospital; they claim they had warned administrators for some time that Veizaga-Mendez was dangerous to patients.
Explaining the Accreditation Debate
As a federal panel negotiating possible new regulations on higher education accreditation ended its (seemingly endless) three-day meeting at a suburban Washington hotel Wednesday, it appeared to have accomplished little. The negotiators reached agreement on just 2 of the 12 issues on their agenda. And the nearly 20 hours of discussion and debate was often mind-numbingly heavy on the minutiae of accreditation, so "in the weeds" that it was not uncommon to see the hardy lobbyists and other interested parties in the cheap seats nod off now and then, when they weren’t distractedly tap-tap-tapping on their Blackberrys. .

Steinem Makes Excuses for Hillary
The Bush White House is seriously considering making Idaho Gov. Dirk Kempthorne the next administrator of the Environmental Protection Agency. In today's Idaho Statesman, Wayne Hoffman quotes Kempthorne saying he "would have to consider" any offer from the president. That means he wants the job. Kempthorne also said that he's been in periodic contact with White House staffers about the job. The Wall Street Journal's "Washington Wire" column predicted July 18 that Bush would wait until the Senate recess before announcing Kempthorne as his choice. The recess began Friday. If it is Kempthorne, Bush will have made a comically anti-environmental choice. During six years in the Senate in the 1990s, Kempthorne scored a "0" on the League of Conservation Voters' legislative scorecards every year except 1993, when Kempthorne scored 6 percent on the basis of one little-remembered vote against funding a rocket booster for the space program that environmentalists judged harmful to the environment.
Victories for Clinton and McCain reshape race
Look closely. Obama gets house for $300,000 below market value? How many people even have a house in America worth $300,000? He took this money from a slum lord that he himself has said is a friend of over 15 years, but somehow only performed 5 hours of work for during this time? The person is a known slumlord and influence peddler under indictment and is a recipient of over $43 million in taxpayer's dollars in Obama's area for repair of the slums of the poor. And Kennedy and Obama are supposed to be supporters of the poor. Kennedy is no supporter except of Kennedy. He is anti-everything that he could not have (real political power) and pro-anything he thinks he can stir up. Stirring up can be a good thing, I like change, but change to inexperience and a willing recipient of gold from the corrupt are not qualities of a President.
Microsoft's Gates looks to future
Gates, who will devote himself full time to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, starting in July, said he would keep his hands in a couple of Microsoft projects that particularly excited him, like developing tablet computers. He said seven million tablet computers had been sold last year, but they were not yet advanced enough to be a mainstream device - although he noted that his 11-year-old daughter and her classmates used only tablet PCs and no textbooks. Gates predicted that advances in software over the next 10 years - what he called the "second digital decade" - would not be held back by the hardware, as chip technology continued its surge toward ever smaller and ever faster processing power, and that changes in technology would be even more dramatic than in the past decade.
Georgios Samaras positive on Celtic move
He's good in the air, he has decent pace and technique and scores spectacular goals, although he'd probably swap them for a few more tap-ins. This is a big chance for him." Celtic can reduce Rangers' lead at the top of the table to a single point, albeit with one match more played, with a victory tonight. Motherwell, who will join third-placed Dundee United on 38 points with a win, have no injury problems but left-back Jim Paterson completes a two-game suspension. Have your say .
Beatty quits, says she regrets 'devastation' caused by scandal
Christine Beatty, 37, resigned her post as chief of staff to Detroit Mayor Kwame Kilpatrick this morning, saying the text-message scandal engulfing the administration has left her unable to do her job effectively. Kilpatrick's office had no comment on Beatty's resignation, and the mayor still has not been seen in public today. Beatty resigned five days after the Free Press reported in an exclusive investigation that she and the mayor had lied under oath in a whistleblower's suit against the city. Text messages exchanged by the two and obtained by the Free Press contradict what they said on the witness stand about their relationship and about their decision to fire a police officer who was investigating possible wrongdoing by the mayor's staff. In her letter of resignation, submitted to the city this morning, Beatty said, "I've served the administration and Detroit citizens with diligence, strength and perseverence and I hope that my efforts will one day show through above all else.
